The Complexity of Commercial Diving

Commercial diving is not just about exploring the underwater world; it's about performing tasks that can range from installation, repair, and maintenance of subsea systems to cleaning and inspecting ships and terminals. Divers in this field face unique challenges, including underwater hazards, equipment complexities, and working in remote locations. The underwater environment can be unforgiving, making it vital for divers to be well-prepared and qualified for the tasks at hand. In addition to diving, these professionals are often required to be skilled in many other roles, often filling positions as such as marine crew, mechanics, construction man, fabricators, medics, HSE specialist, project administration and engineering. Diving is a vehicle to get a skilled worker to the underwater worksite, what tasks the diver performs when he/she gets there is diversly varied, the diver may have to be an expert in literally hundreds of skills and technique.

Risks and Benefits of Commercial Diving

Diving offers a plethora of benefits to the oil and gas industry, from underwater inspections and maintenance to ensuring the efficient performance of vessels. However, it's not without its risks. Divers can face challenges such as decompression illness, drowning, pressure differential, and hazards associated with electricity and energized systems. The key in managing these risks effectively, involves selecting qualified and competent dive team members, adhering to best industry practices, and embracing technology where possible.

Challenges

There are challenges in selecting the right skilled person for diving jobs. First, not every diving job is the same, far from it. Diving is a method to gain access to a worksite, and there are different diving techniques requiring unique training and qualification for each. Skills needed at the worksite vary greatly; Offshore deepwater construction requires far different skills than vehicle recovery from an inland water way, for example. Next, capturing skills and experience into a paper logbook, and communicating that information to future employers is not efficient and does not describe the details needed to show competence in any tasks. Matching workers with specific skills to a defined scope of work is difficult and requires efficient information management. Lastly, falsification of experience, embellishment of proficiency and even fraudulent qualifications are not uncommon in this industry. With no common or unified method of competence assurance in industry, contractors and clients of diving companies are at risk of employing divers which are not certified or inexperienced in the work to be performed. This carries the obvious risk to safety and potential for very serious incidents and liability.
